Associated with pubs and taverns, Celtic music is characterized by lively, interweaving tunes. Reels (in 4/4 time) and jigs (in 6/8) make up the largest portion of this music. Instruments include harp, pipes (bagpipes), bodhran, flutes (made of wood and emphasizing the lower register) and whistles (including the tin whistle resembling a flute's sound, and the low whistle utilized in a flute's absence), fiddles, bouzouki, guitar and banjo. Bagpipes originated in other parts of Europe and became popular in Scottish military band music, strathspreys, slow airs and reels.
